Jizz Cares Results

First off, the Caps were terrible last night as they lost to the Dallas Stars 5-2. The team played poorly. However, Jizz was very active, good and bad. Jizz had a goal, 2 penalties, and an unfortunate picking of his nose:

(via Kristy Morrison, @clancykolzig on Twitter. This is from the Carolina game last Friday)

Though Bruce Boudreau lashed out Jizz at his press conference for his dumb penalties, Jizz brought in a total of $200 for “Give To The Max.” The big winner of the $200 is…Friends of Fort DuPont Ice Arena. Congratulations.

Sadly, only two nonprofits participated for “Jizz Cares”: Friends of Fort DuPont Ice Arena and Little Lights Urban Ministries. Just for Little Lights to participate, I will donate $25 to their nonprofit.

Overall, “Jizz Cares” raised $225. Hopefully next year, Ted Leonsis will mention “Give To The Max” (better yet, this year) as be a great way for nonprofits to raise money during these tough times.

Now, will “Jizz Cares” come back next year? That depends if Semin returns to the Caps since he’s being going on one-year deals. I hope he does, but if he doesn’t return, who deserves to take his place? The players will change, but the process is so much fun when nonprofits and sports are involved :) Let’s do this again next year…and hopefully a Caps win!

Jizz Cares

Ever since Matt Bradley was quoted that Alex Semin “doesn’t care” about last year’s playoffs, most of the Caps fan defended Semin, although everyone agrees he needed to step up when the stakes are higher.

This season, people have started the “Semin Cares,” “Sasha Cares” tweets and chants and it is getting old very quickly. Those chants should be only reserved for the playoffs and one other occasion.

That one occasion is “Give to the Max Day.” “Give to the Max Day” is a fundraising drive in the DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia nonprofits and charities in a 24-hour span. The fundraising event in DC is on November 9. This is where nonprofits step in.

On November 8, the Washington Capitals face the Dallas Stars. When Jizz does something during the game, I will donate money to a charity/nonprofit the following day at “Give it to the Max” Day.  Here’s the breakdown:

  • JIZZ!!! (Whenever Alex Semin scores a goal): $100
  • Jizz on the assist (Semin assist on the goal): $50
  • Jizz in the Box (Semin gets a penalty): $25
Bonus: If Jizz is one of the stars of the game:
  • 3rd Star: $100
  • 2nd Star: $150
  • 1st Star: $250
Rules:
The first charity/nonprofit/nonprofiteer to retweet whenever I tweet when Jizz does something, gets the donation. Your nonprofit must be in the DC Metro area (DC, Northern Virginia, Southern Maryland) participating and have a page on the “Give it to the Max” website to be eligible.
So nonprofits/nonprofiteers, root for Jizz on November 8 to do something and your charity/nonprofit will get something in return from me. Let’s hope Jizz is “Giving it to the Max”…but not the bad kind ;)

The DC Sports Scene: Fall 2011 Edition

For the longest time, the DC sports scene has been horrendous. You’re lucky if you had one good DC team. However, this has been changing the past few weeks.

Redskins

Obviously, this is not the best Redskins team ever, but from training camp, interviews, and their play, this is a different Redskins team in year’s past. Gone are the flashy names Snyder has signed and coming are football players who want to play. Everyone criticized Mike (and his son, Kyle, for that matter) Shanahan for not keeping the house in order and didn’t develop Donovan McNabb or motivate Albert Haynesworth. With the offseason moves they made, guess the Shanny made the right decision. This is a real team. They might win the NFC East, like Rex Grossman predicted, and they’ll unlikely go to the Super Bowl from the mouth of Tim Hightower, but this is finally a “team” and hopefully this continues on a few more years…and hopefully better QBs  and WRs down the line.

Nationals

I predicted the Nationals would win 77 before the season start just for the Werth signing, not necessarily for the statistics, but what he brings to the clubhouse the Nats really lack: winners. I was close…the Nats won 80 (could have been 81 if it wasn’t for the monsoon that hit the Dodgers series). Some say this team will start contending for 2013…I think they’re starting now. They have solid pitching, bullpen and starting, a strong infield, a revelation in power hitting from Michael Morse, and a team bonded together and actual hope. Of course, the Nats need a speedy center fielder, but no necessarily a leadoff hitter. Just want the guy at the 6 or 7 spot to help out the bottom of the lineup. The Nats also need a veteran for the pitching staff. Most everyone will want C.J. Wilson from the Texas Rangers. It would be nice, but after the Yankees performance last night, they’re moving all in to get him and CC Sabathia. Best bet for the Nats: sign Mark Buehrle for a 2-4 year deal and he will be beloved in Washington since when he is pitching, it usually ends around 2 hours, a must for the transient community here. The bigger picture is this: the Nats are coming and a dynasty might start a year earlier than expected. As for the baseball fans in DC: get your tickets now, especially against the Philadelphia Phillies, so we don’t see their tour buses and piss around DC… literally.

By the way, please no managerial change until 2013. We don’t really need Terry Francona, although Joe Maddon is available after the 2012 season.

Wizards

There’s nothing much to say since the Wizards are not going to be good and there’s a lockout. If you’re a fan of the Wizards, you want to side with the owners for a hard salary cap since that will be the only chance the Wizards can be good and if they’re lucky, a championship.

Capitals

If the Nationals are the most anticipated team in DC in 2012, the Capitals are the most anxious. As you know from my past posts, hockey is my number 1 sport to watch, but as I learned from previous years: the regular season doesn’t matter. The NHL regular season is also known as the longest preseason North American sporting league ever. It’s great that the Caps are the best in the “preseason,” but they’re always be determined when the “real” season starts and that’s the playoffs. I do not want the Caps to be number 1 in the “preseason.” I want them to use the regular season to prepare for the playoffs. I expect some struggle, some triumph, some agony, some pain, and something unorthodox throughout the 82 games, but that’s great because it makes the team hungrier to advance beyond the conference semifinals and hopefully the Stanley Cup. Like many other Caps fans, I’m cautiously optimistic for this season, but the Caps need to know: this is the year to capitalize. If they go to the Conference Finals and beyond, consider it a semi-success (the real success is if they win the Stanley Cup). Anything less than that, not only heads will roll at Kettler Iceplex, but the fan base will move somewhere else. From the looks of it, the Caps are looking like the Detroit Red Wings of the 1990s. The question is can they win Stanley Cups like Detroit in the 90s? I am anxiously waiting.

DC has come a long way, but next year is the moment DC should become an emerging sports town as we have more than one (or two) team to root for and anticipate. I don’t remember that happening in DC in a long time. There’s something in the air and t looks great for DC…politics aside.

2010 Washington Capitals Development Camp and Fanfest

I attended the last day of Caps Development Camp just to see the scrimmage, get a couple of stuff, and meet other Caps Tweeters.  If you’re looking for a comprehensive report of Caps Development  for the week… I’m not that guy. If you want to, go to these Caps sites:

As for the game I saw, the guys did look pretty tired after a long week and it showed, but this unit had more bite and intensity in this game.  Here are a few observations:

  • Dmitri Orlov is simply the next Andrei Markov if he can improve on the defensive side.  If he does that, he will be a perfect complement to Mike Green, if they’re ever teammates.
  • Joe Finley seems like a late bloomer to me.  He has the skills and tenacity and is literally Hal Gill 2.0.  However, he hasn’t translated to the rink yet.  He’s tall, physical, and can fight, but he needs to bring it altogether if he can make it to the Hershey roster.
  • The Finley-Pisano fight was terrible, but the Della Rovere-Bruess was an epic fight and both will be in the NHL and I think the Caps needs those characters now, but they’re not ready yet.
  • Almost 3000 came to see the scrimmage and the last day of Caps Development camp. Check that, 2500 people saw the scrimmage, while 500 people were waiting for Brooks Laich autograph and blow…tires.
  • After the shootout ended, the refs were still in World Cup mode. Look at the video below.
  • While the depth at Center for the current Caps roster has not been solved, the depth here at Caps Development Camp with Buress, Cody Eakin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, and Marcus Johansson has a lot of potential.  All this talk about Johansson is going to be a second line center should need to settle down.  He is going to be great for the Caps, but this is his first time on North American ice and coaches should be patient. If I were Boudreau, he should start in the 3rd Line at best and work his way up. You never know when he’ll hit the rookie wall. Cody Eakin showed that he can physical, which is a good thing, and Kuznetsov has tons of skill, but needs to mature and don’t choke under pressure.

This leads me to the overall viewpoint of the Caps offseason.  The future is bright as for the Caps as they have immense talent in Hershey and South Carolina.  However, do they players ready for the NHL now? No. Will some move up the NHL in a couple of years? Yes. Do I expect the Caps to resign all their UFAs next year? No.  I repeatedly said this, but it’s a critical year for the Caps next season.  They must advance far in the playoffs and stop going to Game 7s and stop getting eliminated early.  I expect one last hurrah for the current Caps team and hopefully a trade is in the works so they can get to the Stanley Cup Finals with this team before they have to make a decision.  From today, this group of players has a bright future and will be with the Caps for a long time (5 years in salary cap terms).

*Before you see the pictures and videos below, just want go off the board and tell you that the Hockey Foundation needs your help.  They need to raise $15,000 to send equipment and people to Ladakh.  If they reach their goal, one lucky person who donated $50 or more can be entered to win a trip to the Ladakh to assist handing out equipment to kids and play hockey over there.  For more details, go here: http://www.hockeyfoundation.org/active-contests/

The Caps Offseason

There is a huge split among Caps fans about how they’re doing in the offseason.  It’s the sports version of Team Jacob vs. Team Edward (and I can’t believe I typed that).  One half of Caps fans love the Caps silent approach, while the other half want something to be done in the free agent frenzy.  There is no right or wrong method but there are two strong, valid points of view.

The Quiet Approach

Fans have love this team for almost 5 years (after the lockout) and the team has got better each year (except this past season, but that can be debated).  Why not ruin success, just have the same team and hope they get better.  Also, adding Alzner, Carlson, and Neuvirth full-time will make a team younger and one of the defensive pairings set for a long time with Alzner-Carlson.  Just add one more piece and the team could contend again for the Cup.

The Impact Approach

Since the Caps went out in the first round, people are asking for an impact player.  Caps went for not as Paul Martin and Zbyněk Michálek went to Pittsburgh, Dan Hamhuis went to Vancouver, and the stake that drove some Caps fans hearts, Anton Volchenkov signs a $4.25 Million deal with the Devils.  Some thought Volchenkov was one of the two missing pieces to Cup title run for the Caps.  By that, fans were in an uproar and asking for McPhee’s head (and took it to Ted Leonsis’s email).

In my opinion, it is alright to keep a team the same…if they’re close to a Cup or won the Cup, which the Caps are nowhere near.  To me, the Washington Capitals are the Phoenix Suns of the NHL: exciting to watch, but can’t win championships.  It was telling that Bruce Boudreau mention last year they were “5 to 6 passengers.”  I can accept 1 or 2, but 5-6 is insane.  It’s either the coach or the players to blame. In this case, the coach did not have a “playoff” philosophy, while most of the players did not perform under pressure, hence blowing a 3-1 to Montreal.

If the players won’t change, how about a philosophy for more grit on this team? Do you believe all 23 players will change for a more “playoff-ready” philosophy?  There will be some who like it, but don’t expect all to follow, which people should be more concerned about.  This is where I like this report from ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun:

The Washington Capitals have to re-sign several restricted free agents who filed for arbitration Monday, including Tomas FleischmannEric Fehr and Jeff Schultz. This might be crucial because, as the Washington Post writes, “Some teams, including the Caps, have a reputation for being ruthless in their arguments.”

There was some previous speculation that the Caps could shop Fleischmann but, unless talks go sour, it doesn’t look like that’s happening. However, we know the Caps will look for a defenseman in the free agent or trade markets, so there might be some kind of move coming soon.

The biggest move, however, would be an Alexander Semin trade. Yahoo Sports’ Dmitry Chesnokov previously tweeted that Caps may be actively shopping Semin.

If that’s the case, I hope we trade Jizz to the Stars for Brad Richards on the high-end or trade him to a couple of St. Louis Blues players (Oshie, Berglund, Backes, Brewer since all of them are free agents next year), the Kings for Handzus, or any other combination and the team looks very different before the season starts.

I have patience with Ted and George on these moves and they know what to do since they have all the information and if free agency is dry, so be it.  However, don’t tell me keeping the same roster is an option before the season starts. The mindset has to change from opening night and can be altered during the season. McPhee can say, “We got 121 points last year because we’re a pretty good team and we don’t really need a lot.” That’s fine, but D.C. doesn’t want a good team, D.C. wants a champion.

If I Was Running A Company…Bettina Deynes (Updated)

I read this SHRM article on Bettina Deynes (hat tip to Kristen Hudak, blogger for MASN’s National Buzz, for sending this article) who is the Vice President of HR for the Washington Nationals.  The cover story is about how Bettina and the HR department collaborate with General Manager Mike Rizzo and the front office.

Rizzo wanted a culture of winning in the organization after the Nationals lost more than 100 in back-to-back seasons. On one hand, Rizzo need to sign free agents and develop players who would change the team’s culture.  Rizzo also wanted Bettina to hire more scouts and develop training programs to encourage that for this upcoming season, the Nationals are a serious baseball club.

There are two reasons I love this story.  One was how much Bettina went through with the Nationals since joining in 2006: Alfonso Soriano 40-40 and bolted to the Cubs, the opening of Nationals Park, Dmitri Young and Elijah Dukes, the Dominican Republic player scandal, the Natinals, Jim Bowden, Clint, season ticket holders, Phillies fans, you name it. After all of that, Bettina is still the Vice President of HR and is reaping the benefits of a new (and in my opinion, better) regime and a growing organization this season and hopefully beyond.

The second thing I love this story is this really gives me hope that HR can collaborate with the front office, either in sports or business.  I wish I was in the Nationals HR department to help out, but this made me wonder: does the Washington Capitals (or Washington Sports and Entertainment) have a HR department to improve the organization and hopefully (but really slim chance) to motivate the players on the team?  If Ted Leonsis, George McPhee, or Mary Davis, President of Employment and Administrative Services for Washington Sports and Entertainment, are reading this, if there any HR openings, I’m available and hopefully the HR department collaborates with the front office a lot. Why not stop there: how about the Redskins? Ok, too far (the offices is at Ashburn and I don’t drive). How about working for the Wiz…oh wait, they’re cursed.

Anyway, this has giving me renowned hope that HR can work with the front office, and new hope that a HR department can help a sports team. Thank you, Bettina for giving me a new lease on my working career…

and I’m still waiting for that phone call Ted, George or Mary.

Update: Since the Washington Wizards won the NBA Draft Lottery and get the number 1 pick and likely select John Wall and possibly a big free agent, I wouldn’t mind working for the Wizards at all.  But if I have a list of who to work for in order:

  1. Caps
  2. Nationals
  3. Wizards
  4. Redskins
  5. United
  6. Divas

A Night of Legends

The name of the title refers to an event ESPN980 holds called Lunch with a Legend.  One of the lunches they conducted was  ”legendary Redskins broadcaster” Larry Michael.  EXCUSE ME?!!!  Anyway…

Last Wednesday seemed serendipitous.  I knew for months that January 27, 2010 will be big: I got Caps tickets against the Ducks for $15 each on StubHub and Shauna Moerke’s announcement that she was heading to  DC on a secret mission, which had a domino effect of the events to come.  I knew the night was going to be great…but I had no idea the day was going to be THAT great.

#ConnectHR

After a long day of HR and Recruiting consulting (and beyond), I wanted to go early to the #ConnectHR event since I had “other bidness” to attend that night.  Amazingly, I was not the first person to come in to the event.  The event immediately became packed of HR/Recruiting tweeters;  bloggers;  members of SHRM;  HRA-NCA;  visitors as far from Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Boston, even Portland, Oregon; and others.   Imagine the event as you’re stuck in a Metro train (subway for non-DC area residents) stuffed with congenial people having a conversation and saying “excuse me” a lot.  It was the cavalcade of stars that I could have list a few superstars, but it needed a link since it was that special of who attended.  Since it was crowded, it was hard to navigate to network and I didn’t get to speak to everyone on the list, but for the most part, it was great connecting to people who came all over the country just to network with other HR professionals in DC.  For that, I like to thank SHRM, SmartBrief, Monster, and Recruitingblogs.com for handling the event.

The networking was the main objective of #connecthr, but there were three bonuses that night:

  1. Everyone was taller than Mike Lupica.
  2. I won a gift bag from Monster.  I was number 27…the same number as Washington Capital Defenceman Karl Alzner…who also shares a birthday with me.  By the way, my schwag had a Flip Camera, gift card, beanie cap, and others.
  3. Before I left, China Gorman mention she uses my name as an example of a dedicated HR/Recruiting professional since I “crashed” the SHRM Leadership Conference last November and also my blog posts on HR and Recruiting.  I wanted to be sarcastic, but that was the nicest thing someone has done for me and the only thing I can say is Thank You.

#ConnectHR didn’t had many down moments, but:

  1. I won a Monster Snuggie.  Let me be clear, I like Monster and Eric Winegardner since he gives Monster a human element to the company.  I just don’t like the Snuggie. I believe when you buy a Snuggie, some cult gets rich.  To be fair, my mother loves the Snuggie, so Eric and Monster made my mother happy, but since I had to carry the Snuggie all night, my Q rating dropped that night.
  2. The event needed more Matt Bradley

Which leads to:

The Capitals and #Caps108

For two weeks, I announce that I had one ticket available for the Ducks-Capitals game, but there were no takers.  So sad because the missed a chance to get free wings since the Caps scored 5 goals in a 5-1 win over the Ducks.  In addition, they missed out on meeting Krafty at RocktheRed.net at a carving sandwich stand and another terrific #Caps108 tweetup.  Chasta and Caps Girl explain perfectly what #Caps108 is for.  If you’re a Caps fan and want to meet with other Caps fans/tweeters/media/jack of all trades, come to outside section 108 to chat and say hello.  I’ll be at the next #Caps108 next Friday against the Atlanta Thrashers to 1) root for a Caps victory, 2) convince Ilya Kovalchuk to come to Washington, and 3) bring the 2012 SHRM Annual Conference back to Washington DC from Atlanta, again.

What made the game (and the night) uniquely special was in the third period, during the last Kiss Cam segment, there was a marriage proposal.  I found that poetic that night since it was symbolic for that night.  to put a cherry on top, I finally met one of my Twitter friends, Addison (who also shares a birthday with me), at the Vienna Metro Station when both of us were heading home (he was going back to Arlington, I was heading back to Fairfax.)

***

In my mind, what could have been a Utopian Day was to my connect HR/Recruiters friends, Caps fans, Tony Kornheiser’s littles, the NPR Summer Class of 2005, and my friends and family all meet and network, although that might take 5-10 years for the right event ;) .  That night made me think that 2010 will have a Mr. Tracy Experience* and hopefully this leads to bigger and better things.  I guess the stars and planets align on January 27, 2010 for mine and hopefully yours as well.

Oh, and Obama did his State of the Union Speech thingy.

Super Saturday

I had a busy Saturday and I want to share it because I felt like it and so many stuff to tell.

It begin with what suppose to be a trolley tour to George Mason to see the old and new buildings.  Apparently, the trolley broke down on Braddock Avenue, so instead, they replace it with a tour bus that had disco lights and wine glasses.  It was a nice tour and my favorite part of the tour was the new MasonVale, where it’s 1950s sitcom style of housing and faculty live there.

After getting some grub and getting attack by bees and caricature artists, I went to a session on Being Green and actually learn something from it.  Actually, I did my own Eco FootPrint Test and actually tested well…except for food.  Apparently, if I become a vegan, I save one whole planet.  That is not going to happen. anytime soon…unless it’s Lent.

After the Green session, I headed to Jim Larranaga’s session and easily was one of the better sessions as Larranaga told stories from GMU’s teams of past, present, and future, why he came here, and the Mike Morrison story, which was hilarious.  After the George Mason School of Management Silver Anniversary Reception (since I’m with the Board of Directors), it was time to head to DC.

Initially, I didn’t have tickets for the game since it already sold out, but luckily one of my Caps Twitter friends had some tickets available.  I was able to afford it and got to go to the Caps season opener.  There were two main reasons I wanted to go to the game: hockey, and tweetups.  The hockey action was great…for the first two periods with the Caps scoring 6 goals in that span and had control of the game from the start.  Also, there were a lot of red uniforms in the stands and this is slowly becoming a hockey town.  If you don’t believe that, ask Elliotte Friedman of CBC, and yes, Pierre McGuire.

The other main reason I want to go is see my other #Caps tweeters in action and catch up on what they did over the summer.  It was like a family reunion or a Caps Hockey Thanksgiving, but we have to pay for our food.  I met the usual gang and finally met the prominent Caps Tweeters for the first time and wish I could do more of these over the season and concludes in raising the Cup in D.C.

So, how was your weekend?

Tracy’s Random Thoughts: May 2009 Edition

Summer is coming soon and I’m starting to get sweaty.  Let’s hurry this up:

1. Torture Debate

Everyone knows that waterboarding is illegal and everyone knows Dick Cheney and the CIA lied to Congress about utilizing torture and not disclose it.  Now there’s a debate on doing a criminal investigation on Cheney’s practices.  However, Obama has repeatedly said that we have to move on as country and not look into the past.  People who study constitutional law and pundits have said the government must prosecute who is responsible of handling these torture tactics or we’re going to be the world would view us as losing credibility.

This seems like a chess game Cheney wants to play and the thing is, he does not care and eventually he will get his checkmate, but which route does Obama takes?  He could take the short approach and let Cheney go scot free or he takes the long approach where there’s an investigation, the review of evidence, the charge of Cheney for using torture tactics, the trial, and the decision where it could take 2-4 years, which would be the front page and the other stories from the economy and healthcare will be in the back burner no matter what Obama does.  Simply, Dick Cheney is the Joker.  He wants chaos, make people suffer and challenge the heart of America.   Cheney is doing a great job at it, just ask Nancy Pelosi.  In my opinion, Obama is playing his cards right, but he ain’t getting any help from the media who let Cheney have his talking points.  No wonder people have a disdain with traditional media.

2. Governor Chet Culver

I really hate politics when it gets personal.  People who hold these powerful positions are using their personal agenda and put it to their own use and leave out the government and the people like a dictator would act.  This is where Chet Culver steps in.  He has stated that he is against gay marriage.  When gay marriage was passed in the Iowa Supreme Court, Culver decided not to support an amendment because he read the Court ruling and it was fair.   This goes to show you might not like it personally, but when reason comes to play, you understand why they made the decision.  Governor Culver is moving high on my top politicians list.

3. Washington Capitals

The last game against the Penguins was a killer for me since this could of been the year the curse would of been lifted. However, the Caps gag and its on to next year.  I do hope they get a tough defensemen and play solid D for the whole season.  Only guy I can think of is Chris Pronger, but with the Caps luck, he might get penalized for every time he skates on the ice.  Whatever they do, they earn the trust for D.C. sports fans.  This is an exciting time to be a Caps fan.

4. Twitter

I really enjoy Twitter a lot.  It brought me new friends and met nearly half of my follower list.  The problem is now when is the next big thing.  Twitter is hot right now, but when you have Ashton Kutcher promoting your product, you tend to hesitate that Twitter’s hot streak is short live.  It might have started with the fix replies situation where everyone is up in arms, but will be soon when people join the Twitter bandwagon and the geeks will create and go to another route and the bandwagon effect comes when the product is hot.  That’s how social media goes.

See, that was quick.

Last Weekend of April 2009

I rarely type anything personal on my blog since I go to Twitter a lot, but for this post, it’s pretty big to fit in 140 characters.

I am going to be live tweeting today (midnight as I’m typing on the East Coast now) at the Young Non-Profit Network (YNPN)’s National Conference in DC, then going to happy hour following the conference, then stay to enjoy Game 5 (well, if the Caps win, then I’ll enjoy it) and live tweet there.

Saturday will be non-stop NFL Draft action and on Sunday, a little NFL Draft and if the Caps win Game 5, then possibly going to a DC NHL Tweetup in the afternoon.

I’m also mentioning this because it has been a bizzaro week.  Monday, I was wearing my hockey jersey and jeans and won a signed Chris Clark hockey stick. On Wednesday, I carpooled on Earth Day and wore business casual.  Likely today, I will be wearing business formal…on a FRIDAY!!!  That’s is so messed up (but it will be all messed up if the Caps lose the series).

Alright, so I see you in DC on Friday for the YNPN conference, Rock the Red, and follow my insanity on the NFL Draft, where it’s likely the Skins will officially become DC’s 2nd team if they trade up for Mark Sanchez.

Bye for now.
